5 Signs You Need an Oil Change

Regular oil changes are essential in order to keep your vehicle running smoothly and prevent unwanted friction. Most experts recommend changing your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on your driving style, vehicle, and oil type. However, there are some exceptions. Sometimes your vehicle gives off certain signs when it needs a new batch of oil. Here are five of these signs so you know when it's time for a change:

1. Dark, Dirty Oil

One of the most obvious signs you need an oil change is the color of the oil. If it is dark, dirty, or has debris in it, changing it is recommended. How can you inspect the oil? Simply locate the oil dipstick and pull it out when the car is not running. It is important that you do this when the engine is cold and the car is not running to avoid oil spills and splashes.

2. Engine Noise

If your engine is making unusual noises, it could be a sign that your oil needs changing. As the oil becomes thicker and dirtier, it does a worse job of lubricating and protecting the parts. This can be detected by any unfamiliar noises, which are most likely the result of parts rubbing against each other.

3. Decreased Fuel Efficiency

Dirty oil can also lead to decreased fuel efficiency. When the oil is not lubricating the engine correctly, it causes it to work harder, leading to decreased fuel economy. If you find yourself at the gas station more often than usual, make sure to visit a repair shop.

4. Dashboard Warning Light

Vehicles are equipped with all kinds of gauges and lights. Several of them are connected to the oil. Some of them monitor its pressure; others exert it. If you notice any of them being too high or too low, it's most likely a problem with the oil. This especially applies to the temperature gauge because when oil gets old, it tends to heat up faster than usual.

5. Burnt Oil Smell

Your engine has a lot of parts and seals that keep everything together and working properly. Sometimes these seals and gaskets leak into the cylinders, and the engine starts to consume oil. The result is a burning smell, which can be easily noticed and distinguished from other odors.
